Strength training and cardio are often presented as competing choices, but they improve different parts of fitness. The better starting point depends on whether you want to build strength, improve endurance, manage your weight, or simply become more active.
A more useful way to compare them is by goal: which one better supports strength, endurance, weight management and the kind of routine you can realistically maintain.
TL;DR: Neither is universally better. Strength training helps build or maintain muscle and strength, while cardio improves cardiovascular fitness and endurance. For overall health, adults are generally advised to work toward both: at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, or the vigorous-intensity equivalent, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days. Beginners can start with less and build gradually. [1]
